Throughout Nineteen Eighty-Four, George Orwell demonstrates throughout his writing that women are socially constructed differently to men. This can be seen multiple times as Winston commonly describes women only on their physical appearance and refers to them never by first name. For example when Winston’s neighbour knocks on his door and says “It was Mrs Parsons, the wife of a neighbour on the same floor”. Not only is she not given a first name, but she is only referred to as a wife to Winston’s neighbour. By only naming her as a wife, this shows how socially women were not important and their status revolved around men and marriage.
